Five years after Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria, the island was ravaged by Hurricane Fiona. Catholic Extension Society continues to be the leading Catholic organization coordinating the island’s long-term recovery efforts from Maria to rebuild nearly 1,000 damaged Catholic schools and parishes.
Today we need your help for the people who are hurting in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Fiona.
The one thing that has been proven time and time again is that the Catholic Church is one of the most capable and reliable institutions in times of disaster. Most recently, the Diocese of Ponce was on the ground providing humanitarian aid to the southern coast of Puerto Rico as they take their first steps towards recovery. Catholic Extension Society is currently supporting this work.
Church leaders in Puerto Rico are actively working to:
- Get food to people stuck in the mountains due to mudslides and flooding
- Attend to the elderly, whose homes and possessions have been ruined by floods
- Aid the poor, who are left helpless without electricity or running water
The effects of Hurricane Fiona this past Sunday highlight the urgency and necessity of Catholic Extension Society’s ongoing efforts to build a more resilient Puerto Rican Church that can help shelter, serve, and comfort even more poor and vulnerable during future natural disasters.
Catholic Extension Society is talking to Catholic leaders on the ground who while clawing their way out of the storm’s damage are making a “B-line” to help the those in greatest need on the island.
